SPIRITUAL SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE IN TURKEY


On 07.01.2015, “Cooperation Protocol for Providing Spiritual Support in Hospitals” was signed between the Presidency of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Health. Within the scope of the protocol, a pilot application was initiated in Ankara, Istanbul, Erzurum, Kayseri, Ordu and Samsun in 2015. The result of the pilot application, which lasted for 3 months, was evaluated at the meeting and workshop attended by Ministry and Presidency officials and expert academicians, and it was decided that the moral support service would continue in the same hospitals.

In 2016, Spiritual Support Service started to be offered in hospitals determined in Adana, Afyonkarahisar, Bursa, Çorum, İzmir, Kahramanmaraş, Konya and Sakarya along with these provinces.

Spiritual Support Service has started to be offered in our hospital as of December 21, 2016. A Spiritual Support Unit has been established by our hospital management in order to provide the said service in an effective, efficient and duly manner. Spiritual support is provided to the requesting patient, patient relatives and hospital staff by the relevant personnel in this unit.

In the Spiritual Support Unit; The importance that religion attaches to protecting health, treatment and understanding the disease correctly, the positive effects of worship on being healthy, worship in case of illness and in the hospital environment, resignation, accident, fate, patience, gratitude, etc. Topics are explained in an appropriate language.

Spiritual support personnel provide moral support services to people of all faiths and work in cooperation with other hospital personnel upon request, regardless of belief.


SPIRITUAL SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE IN TURKEY

Those who succeeded by participating in the "Hospital Spiritual Guidance and Support Service Training" held between 17 October and 11 November 2016 were assigned as "Spiritual Support Personnel" in the hospitals determined in the aforementioned 14 provinces.

What is Spiritual Support?
Spiritual support service; based on religious references, helping people develop their skills to adapt and cope with the new situation they are exposed to, when they are in pain, distress, sadness, fear, feelings of loneliness and hopelessness, in crisis situations that come with sudden changes, to answer their questions, and to accompany them to give a new meaning to their lives. is to try to give them morale.

The purpose of moral support service in hospitals; that patients, their relatives and hospital personnel live, worship and pray in the hospital within the framework of their own wishes and demands, taking into account the special conditions they are in, and within the framework of the values they believe in; to have the necessary religious information according to their position; It is to help those who are in spiritual need and helpless situation to meet their needs, to help them overcome their problems caused by their diseases and to provide moral support, thereby contributing to their pathological recovery.

In hospitals, prisons and social service institutions, the personnel who provide this service are called Spiritual Support Personnel.

What is not?
Moral support ; Psychotherapy is not social care or medical treatment.

Spiritual Support Personnel; A Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Social Worker, is not a Doctor who carries out medical treatment.

Spiritual Support Personnel; It provides service with a multidisciplinary approach with Hospital Staff. Provides Moral-Motivational support by providing Counseling and Guidance in the light of Spiritual Values.


Spiritual Support Principles
1.Spiritual Support; It is applied according to the needs of the requesting patient, patient relatives and hospital staff.

2. First of all, the need of the person who requests spiritual support is determined.

3. Listening, understanding and interpretation method is emphasized.

4. It is tried to reach the result together in line with the needs and expectations of the requester.

5. From Spiritual Support Personnel; It is expected to establish a close relationship, to give confidence to individuals, to be sincere and sincere, to welcome the client with a smiling face and to try to understand.

6. By creating an atmosphere of unpressured consultation, it allows the person to open their problems comfortably in a way that they will not be judged and feel guilty.

7. The provisions of the "Personnel Confidentiality Agreement" determined by the Ministry shall be adhered to.

8-There is no discrimination between people who request Spiritual Support Service. Not classified. It is ensured that every person who requests receives this service.
